I’m sure for many of us the main attraction in the arcades has been its video games. It was an unique feeling playing the many classics as each cabinet was dedicated to each game. If you been around in the 80’s and been playing its video games. I’m sure you might have seen titles as Pac-Man, Double Dragon and Super Sprint. Arcade games, as well as Pinball machines have almost disappeared from the public and today nowhere to be found. The slot machines have pretty much flooded the amusement industry. If you are curious if its possible to play the older games? Keep on reading. MAME which is an Arcade emulator lets us experience the classic titles on our PC hardware. The Arcade emulation is identical as the roms are dumped from original arcade memory. Almost any arcade title you can think of is available for this emulator.

Even though the old arcade machines are gone, we can still enjoy the games which is wonderful for us retro gamers. Even though we can play the games, its not the same experience like the real arcade machines. There are no arcade controls, coin doors nor arcade display. Since some arcade gamers feel the same about it, there is a growing amount of people who build MAME arcade cabinets. In detail, a MAME cabinet is a cabinet which looks a lot like a real arcade cabinet and have the same elements.

Without a Frontend it is much more work to start different games since one would need to control with keyboard or mouse. Frontends lets us control the different emulators with the arcade controls. The configuration can be quite time consuming if you want to emulate other platforms but it could be worth it. Perhaps you want to play Sega and Amiga games then this is possible. Hiding Windows desktop and boot screens is also possible with configuration.

As for the arcade parts, don’t worry as there are plenty places to get them if you were to build a cabinet. Just keep an eye open. A PC monitor could be used a the display and is quite a frequent solution for the MAME cabinets and builders. Still these monitors are not able to show the low resolutions as we remember from the actual arcade machines. If you life in the US Wells Gardner produces arcade monitors which have superb picture quality. They are perfect for the many arcade and MAME cabinet gamers who dont want to use computer or LCD screens as displays. If located in Europe I would highly recommend a Scart TV and Arcade VGA card as this setup can display the games native resolutions just as the real arcades. To sum it up, the MAME emulator makes its possible to play all the classic arcade games.
